My friends Laura and Mike arrived last night. They have a car so we set off for Parke's Castle on Lough Gill about 9 miles from Sligo. . Driving here on the left is a two-person job and they are a great team! It was really nice to be driving on the country roads. The castle is a 15th-17th century plantation castle that has been restored using Irish oak wood. Beautiful woodwork, especially the roof supports, doors and left-handed spiral staircases. . We learned about The Irish Vernacular House, a type of architecture. . There were some really good exhibits about how people lived at the time, even a straw hat! There was a small well next to the building they were replacing the thatch on. .
We left the castle and headed back to Sligo. Along the way Laura spotted another Lough with some ruins somewhere across the water that we couldn't find. The Lough and surrounding countryside were lovely (as they say here) .
After lunch, they headed off with more family they have met in Ireland. I visited the Yeats Memorial Building exhibit and then came back to pack for Trinity College tomorrow. Great day!
